ABOUT THE ART

The paintings vary from the intimate in scale, suitable for a domestic environment, to large formats which suit more expansive interior settings such as loft accommodation or commercial/business environments.

Colour is my primary medium of expression. I have a strong understanding that pigment and colour is the product of light reflected from a surface. This being so I strive to create images which radiate out from the canvas almost like a light shining outwards from an open window. I also strongly believe that colour can directly affect mood and I endeavour to provoke a strong emotional but sympathetic response from the viewer.

In an era where magnolia is king these paintings celebrate the joy and visceral thrill of colour for its own sake. My paintings are not intended to sink shyly into the background but are positive authoritative statements.

The paintings also rely on the subtle modulation of surface, employing glazes; matt, metallic and pearlescent paints. This means the paintings subtly shift with changes in light intensity. Shifts from natural to artificial illumination produce changes in the appearance of the paintings affording the viewer a myriad of differing viewing experiences from one single image

My pictorial work is vibrant and intense. Although the paintings are clearly abstract in appearance they have strong resonance with landscape, biomorphic forms and atmospheres. They also reflect my passion for music often taking their original inspiration from particular compositions, which are used to guide the development of the paintings.

The paintings vary from the intimate in scale, suitable for a domestic environment, to large formats which suit more expansive interior settings such as loft accommodation or commercial/business environments.

It is a well-known axiom that art is built on art and that little is truly original, in this spirit I have many influences such as Matisse, Rothko, Klimpt, Diebenkorn, Ayers and others as. These influences are identifiable through my celebration of colour and design however it is also clear that I have developed a distinctive vocabulary of my own providing my own authoritative and original voice.

I strongly believe that a successful painting should stand alone and not be reliant on words and theories to validate or explain its existence. That a painting should exist as an entity in its own right expressing it’s own identity and that it should speak directly to the spectator.

The paintings make dynamic statements and are particularly suited to interiors that require a keynote image to help enhance and give character to a room.

This combination of rich colour and varied surface creates a rich and seductive impression.
